Huawei Hid Business Operations in Iran

Newly obtained documents from Reuters show that China’s Huawei Technologies tried to cover up its relationship with a firm that had tried to sell prohibited U.S. computer gear to Iran.

The cover-up began when in 2013, Reuters and others reported deep links between the firm and the telecom-equipment giant’s chief financial officer.

According to the report, Huawei took several steps to distance itself from the accusations regarding its control of Skycom, which comprised of changing managers at the firm, shutting down its office in Tehran office and setting up a different Iranian business to take over Skycom’s contract.

The revelations in the new documents could strengthen a criminal against Huawei that the U.S. has been trying to pursue against the company and it’s chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou.

A U.S. indictment claims that Huawei and Meng participated in a fraudulent scheme to acquire prohibited U.S. goods and technology for Skycom, and move money out of Iran by deceiving a major bank. The indictment says that Skycom was an “unofficial subsidiary” of Huawei, not a local partner.

Newly leaked documents highlight how Huawei Technology was secretly controlling Skycom Tech Co Ltd, contradicting the claim that they were separate companies. As such, we label the claim that Huawei Technologies was secretly in control of Iran’s Skycom Tech Co Ltd as “True”.
