The Claim

The video below depicts Muslims praying in front of the Hagia Sophia after it reopened as a mosque.

Emerging story

In late July 2020, social media users began posting a video that they claim depicts Muslims praying at the Hagia Sophia after it reopened as a mosque in July 2020. One caption translates to: "Since it was opened, the Morning Prayer at the Hagia Sophia. This is what the infidels fear if as many people joined the Mass Morning Prayer as the Friday Prayer..."
Claims were circulating across the MENA region.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation found that the video was actually taken years before. We conducted a reverse image search of screenshots from the video and found that it was posted on YouTube as early as 2014. The Hurriyet Daily News and other sites reported on the video then.
