The Claim

Pfizer’s head of research said that the COVID-19 vaccine will make women infertile.

Emerging story

Now that Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine has been approved for use in the UK, rumors began circulating on blogs and social media that the vaccine will make women infertile.
Users across social media continued to push this claim.

Misbar’s Analysis

The Misbar team has determined that the claim is false. A blog called “Health and Money News” published a story with a headline that read: “Head of Pfizer Research: Covid vaccine is female sterilization”.
First, the statement in the headline is a mischaracterization. The post claims that the vaccine includes a spike protein called syncytin-1, "vital for the formation of human placenta in women," and that the protein could be targeted by the body’s immune system.

According to the blog post, “If the vaccine works so that we form an immune response AGAINST the spike protein, we are also training the female body to attack syncytin-1, which could lead to infertility in women of an unspecified duration.” The headline being stated does not match the claim in the post.

Second, the blog cites Dr. Michael Yeadon as the “ex-Pfizer head of respiratory research”. This is not true. According to Yeadon’s LinkedIn profile, Yeadon served as the
CSO and VP, Allergy & Respiratory Research Head at Pfizer from 2006-2011.

The blog links to a letter written by Yeadon and Dr. Wolfgang Wodarg, a lung specialist and former head of the public health department, directed to the European Medicine Agency (EMA). The EMA is responsible for the drug’s approval. The letter calls for the “immediate suspension of all SARS CoV 2 vaccine studies, in particular the BioNtech/Pfizer study.”

While the headline of the blog claims that the vaccine will make women infertile, the content in the blog only says that it “could”. Furthermore, Dr. Michael Yeadon never served as the head of respiratory research at Pfizer. As such, we rate the claim that Pfizer’s head of research said that the COVID-19 vaccine will make women infertile as false.
