The Claim

Left-leaning social media is advocating for “canceling” Helen Keller.

Emerging story

Helen Keller was a blind and deaf woman born in 1880. With the help of her teacher, Anne Sullivan, she managed to overcome her disabilities and communicate with others. Ever since her story has inspired many. There’s even a statue of her in Washington, DC.

Then, Time published an article on Hellen Keller. In response, right-wing publications posted their own articles. They alleged that the Time article is advocating for “canceling” Helen Keller. What this actually means is uncertain, as Hellen Keller lacks social media accounts because dead people can’t use social media (not yet anyway).

Misbar’s Analysis

The Time article doesn’t say anything about canceling Hellen Keller, it simply argues that there’s a lot about Hellen Keller’s life most people don’t know about. She was a co-founder of the American Civil Liberties Union, a member of the Socialist Party, as well as a proponent for birth control.

The article does offer one Black activist’s perspective, that, while Keller no doubt went through some difficult circumstances, she is only considered “special” because she’s a white person. This does not reflect most peoples’ opinions toward Hellen Keller, nor does it advocate for canceling Hellen Keller.
