The Claim

CNN reported on a cannibalism outbreak among recipients of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Emerging story

In December 2020, as the U.S. began its first rollout of the Covid-19 vaccination, rumors began circulating on social media that highlighted what appeared to be a screenshot from CNN that showed a hospital emergency room scene, and a caption that hospitals were on lockdown as “first COVID vaccine patients begin eating other patients.”

Other social media users felt that it was real.

Additional social media users claimed this was a conspiracy.

Misbar’s Analysis

The Misbar team has determined that the claim is false. No news outlet, including CNN, has reported on the alleged claim that recipients of the COVID-19 vaccine caused an outbreak of cannibalism.

Additionally, we conducted a reverse image search and found that the image being circulated (pictured below) comes from a New York Times opinion article dated to February 14, 2019, which highlights observations on treating victims of gun violence at Temple University.

We rate the claim as false.
