The Claim

Dating app Bumble removed its political filter in an effort to stop alleged misuse.

Emerging story

Following the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, rumors began circulating on social media that the dating app Bumble removed the ability to filter by political party affiliation to prevent users of the site from alleged misuse.

Users across social media continued to push this claim.

Misbar’s Analysis

The Misbar team has determined that the claim is true. Bumble temporarily removed the political filter in the United States after multiple users tweeted about using it to find those who participated in the insurrection. The use of the filter allows users to search by political affiliation and some conservative users had posted photos of themselves inside the U.S. Capitol during the insurrection.

The FBI had asked for the public’s help in identifying those who were part of the insurrection. Users began noticing the lack of a political filter on January 14, 2021.

The removal of the filter was later confirmed by Bumble.

The move drew criticism from Twitter users, saying that the removal of the feature would help protect those who participated in the attack.

On Saturday, January 16, 2021, Bumble reinstated the feature. We rate the claim as true.
