The Claim

Suicide Attack in Iraq is linked to the new US administration.

Emerging story

In January 2021, days after Joe Biden took office in the United States, a twin suicide bombing attack occurred in Iraq’s capital, Baghdad. The bombing resulted in killing more than 32 people and injured more than 100 at the busy market. Claims assuming that the new US administration has something to do with the attack started circulating.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar didn’t find any evidence to support the claim. There was no link between Baghdad’s incident and the new US administration. The investigation is still ongoing. The motive behind the attack also remains unclear.

The attacks took place days after Iraq's government stated l elections will be postponed to give electoral authorities more time to register voters and new parties.

Iraqi President Barham Saleh said that the targeting of innocent people in Baghdad confirms the attempt by “the groups of darkness”, as he described them, to target all national entitlements and the security of the Iraqi people.

Ali al-Bayati, a member of the Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights, tweeted that the bombings were an "indicator of the return of terrorism" and "the weakness of security institutions".
