The Claim

President Joe Biden has said nothing about and done nothing in response to the Texas power outages.

Emerging story

Severe winter storms in mid-February 2021 have caused power outages and water access issues across Texas. Several dozen have died due to consequences of the power outages.

Some have taken to social media to claim that Biden has done nothing to address the situation.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation found that the claim is incorrect. On February 14, 2021, two days before the first instance of the viral claim, Biden declared a state of emergency in the state of Texas, authorizing FEMA to assist with disaster mitigation efforts and providing federal funding for 77 counties.

Texas Governor Greg Abbot said of Biden’s actions: “I thank President Biden for his assistance as we respond to impacts of winter weather across our state. While this partial approval is an important first step, Texas will continue to work with our federal partners to ensure all eligible Texans have access to the relief they need.”

Biden also tweeted about the Texas outages several times this week. He and Dr. Jill Biden are traveling to Houston on Friday, February 26, to meet with state and local officials.

Since Biden publicly commented on the emergency situation several times before the viral post took off, we rate this claim as fake.
