The Claim

Texas Mayor Tim Boyd had already resigned prior to his controversial Facebook post.

Emerging story

On February 16, 2021, Tim Boyd, the Mayor of Colorado City, Texas, shared a Facebook post in which he lashed out at citizens seeking aid during the blackouts caused by the Texas storm. At least 24 deaths have occurred as a result of the frigid temperatures. Boyd stated, “No one owes you or your family anything, nor is it the local governments responsibility to support you during trying times like this.”

He continued, writing, “This is sadly a product of a socialist government where they feed [sic] people to believe that the FEW will work and others will become dependent for handouts.”

The post went viral across various social media outlets and news platforms.

Later, Boyd claimed that he’d made the comments as a Texas citizen, as he was no longer mayor. In a second Facebook post that has since been removed he wrote, “I had already turned in my resignation and had not signed up to run for mayor again on the deadline that was February 12th.”

He further apologized, “for the wording and some of the phrases that were used!”

Misbar’s Analysis

USA Today has reported that it is unclear whether Boyd actually resigned before or after his original post, and whether he was speaking from the point of view of a citizen, or a political official. Colorado City Manager, David Hoover, told NBC News that Boyd, in fact, stepped down from his role on Tuesday, February 16th. The Dallas Morning News reported that he had been scheduled to speak at an upcoming City Council meeting.

Due to the information presented, Misbar finds this claim to be suspicious.
