The Claim

The United Methodist Church said that all Trump supporters are racists.

Emerging story

The United Methodist Church (UCM) is an organization made up of Methodist churches. It does so to run several initiatives, be they mission trips, education, etc. The Gateway Pundit, a far-right news outlet, published an article titled “United Methodist Church Promotes Hateful Propaganda Alleging Trump Supporters are KKK, Confederate-Supporting Racists.” The article was spread on social media.

Like the title implies, the author alleges that the UCM is calling all Trump supporters racist. It does so by citing an infographic produced by a UCM-affiliated program

Misbar’s Analysis

The infographic is from an initiative called the R-Squared project. It’s basically a website espousing anti-racist content with a bit of religion thrown in the mix. One such piece of content is “Anti-racism Starts: Do’s and Don’ts."

Text

Description automatically generated

The actual text that article references doesn’t call Trump supporters racist. Rather, it simply states that some people in the mob at the US capitol building had KKK and confederate flags. It never states that those people were Trump supporters, or that Trump supporters are racist. Rather, the Gateway Pundit is assuming that all Trump supporters represent those at the capitol riot.
