The Claim

Note: Misbar will sometimes conduct satirical fact-checks for fun. This is one such fact-check.

On May 4th, 2021, Yahoo Answers will be shutting down.

Emerging story

Since June, 2005, Yahoo Answers has graced the internet as a user-based Q&A forum. However, Yahoo announced on April 5th that they will be closing down the site, and that users had until April 20th to post their final questions. Users have pointed blame at Yahoo’s mismanagement of the forum, Verizon (Yahoo’s parent company), anonymous posters, and censorship as reasons for the site closing down.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar's investigation found that it is true: Yahoo Answers’ days are numbered. Not since the burning of the Library of Alexandria, or the pillaging of Baghdad’s ancient tomes, or the destruction of the Tower of Babel itself has human knowledge been so utterly ravaged.

How could such a tragedy happen? Of course, it would be easy to tell you why Yahoo Answers is being cast out of the internet like a leper from Judea. However, the more interesting question to pose is this: how was Yahoo Answers allowed to reveal so much forbidden knowledge in the first place?

In truth, it wasn’t even the answers of Yahoo Answers that made it great. It was the questions. Questions which society as a whole was too cowardly to ask before this stupendous platform forced its way into existence. Questions such as the following:

And, of course:

All of these fearless inquiries will soon become grains of sand in the vast desert of the past. Luckily, some of the greatest questions and answers have been archived, but who knows how many more will be lost? Unfortunately, the powers-that-be have seen fit to put an end to this platform. And for that, we mourn.

Godspeed, Yahoo Answers.
