The Claim

Pop star Mariah Carey received a fake COVID-19 vaccine.

Emerging story

Videos of Carey receiving the COVID-19 vaccine went viral in April 2021.

Social media users pointed out that the needle appears to retract rather than enter her arm, and claimed that means she did not actually receive the vaccine.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation found that the video shows Carey receiving the COVID-19 vaccine with a safety needle.

We’ve debunked the notion of “disappearing needles” before. As we said in that fact-check: “Some have misinterpreted safety syringes’ retractable needles. Safety syringes are often used in vaccine distribution. The needle retracts into the main vessel of the syringe to prevent others from being stuck with a contaminated needle. Although it may appear to proponents of the ‘disappearing needle’ theory that the use of safety syringes means that people are not getting vaccinated, it is actually a necessary health precaution.”

Further, we contacted the facility where Carey received her vaccine. While they cannot verify her vaccination due to HIPPA laws, they did tell us that they use safety needles and do not fake vaccinations.
