The Claim

A picture depicts the Danish footballer Christian Eriksen waving from a hospital window following a public cardiac arrest during a football match on Saturday.

Emerging story

An image widely circulating on social media depicts Danish soccer player Christian Eriksen waving from a hospital window. The accompanying claim is that this is Eriksen’s first appearance after he suddenly collapsed during the Denmark-Finland match in the Euro 2020 Cup on Saturday. The image has been viewed almost 2 million times and shared nearly 54000 times on TikTok. Users expressed relief and gratitude for his speedy recovery.

Misbar’s Analysis

The Misbar investigation found the claim misleading. A reverse image search using Tin Eye revealed that Daily Mail first uploaded the image on 27 January 2020.

Upon further research, articles publishing the images were found here and here, revealed that the images were taken during a medical check-up in Milan, Italy, when he transferred from Tottenham to Inter Milan club. Eriksen appeared and waved to fans who had come out to see him. The image was also uploaded to Twitter, as can be seen below.

The player’s actual first appearance from the hospital after his cardiac arrest was posted on his official Instagram account and can be seen below. He is still in bed and recovering but appears to be in high spirits.

The caption thanked everyone, explained that he still requires tests to be done at the hospital, and cheered on his teammates for their next matches.
