Misbar’s Analysis

We concluded that the viral image does not show how Canadians buy peanut butter. Just like many other countries, Canadian peanut butter is generally packaged in jars. Canada carries many of the brands that are common in other places, such as Jif and Kraft. Canadian YouTuber J.J. McCullough responded to the claim, stating: “No, this is not how Canadians buy peanut butter. We buy it in jars just like the rest of the civilized world.”

In fact, the image included in the meme was not even taken in Canada. It originates from a May 28 Facebook post from a user residing in Trinidad and Tobago. The user says that the photo was taken in a grocery store in the Trinidad town of Arima.

After the image went viral, St Kitts and Nevis Consumer Affairs Department opened an investigation to see if there were any food safety violations. According to an article from Loop News, loose peanut butter used to be common in markets and neighborhood shops across Trinidad. However, once people began shopping in large chain supermarkets, the practice lost prominence.
