Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the purported video and determined that it was misleading. The video is outdated; it was taken on Dec. 2019 during the opening of a street renamed after martyr Mohammed Hisham Matar. At the time, PM Hamdok attended the ceremonial opening of the street, which was previously known as Inqaz Street and is located in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum.

Media outlets had shared some photos and videos for Hamdok when he spoke at the event. In these, Hamdok appears wearing the exact same clothes he also wore in the circulated video.

Social media accounts also shared at the time videos of Hamdok standing at the stage and speaking to the public.

Abdalla Hamdok returned as prime minister under an agreement with the commander of the Sudanese army, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan. Hamdok’s reinstatement as PM comes after nearly a month of his dismissal on October 25, as part of a series of decisions issued by Al-Burhan at the time to dissolve the government and the Sovereign Council and to suspend several Articles of Sudan’s Constitutional Declaration of 2019.

The agreement between Al-Burhan and Hamdok stipulated that the latter would form a government of technocrats. He said in an interview with Reuters that it would have the opportunity to improve the standard of living in the country.

After the agreement between Al-Burhan and Hamdok, the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, witnessed demonstrations on November 25 to protest the political agreement between the military commander and the reinstated prime minister.
