Old Picture Shared as Turkish Citizens Protesting Against Erdoğan
The image was first published on The Guardian in early 2014 (Facebook).

The Claim

A picture depicts thousands of Turkish citizens protesting against president Tayyip Erdoğan recently.

Emerging story

A Facebook page posted a picture purporting to show a Turkish protest against president Tayyib Erdoğan that took place recently in Turkey.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar has investigated the claim and discovered that the photograph was outdated.

A Google reverse search revealed that the photograph had nothing to do with the recent protests in Turkey, which we confirmed.

The image was posted on The Guardian earlier in 2014, attached to an article titled "Funeral of Turkish boy Berkin Elvan draws thousands to Istanbul streets."

The article discussed protests following the death of a 15-year-old boy who died as a result of a head injury sustained during anti-government demonstrations in June 2013.

Our team also discovered the same image on Getty Images in March 2014 and reported on the protests after Berkin Elvan's death.
