2019 Video Shared As Recent Protest in Al-Qatif Against Saudi’s Latest Wave of Executions
The video first appeared online in 2019 (Twitter).

The Claim

The video shows a night-time march that recently took place in Saudi Arabia’s Al-Qatif governorate in protest of the government’s latest wave of executions.

Emerging story

Twitter users have recently shared a video claiming that it showed a recent night-time march in Saudi Arabia’s Al-Qatif governorate in protest of the government’s latest wave of executions of 81 individuals in a single day.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s team investigated the circulated claim and found it misleading. The video was first shared on social media in July 2019. The video showed people in a funeral procession of two young men executed by the Bahraini authorities at the time. While Misbar’s team could not verify the exact time and location of the video, it remains obvious that it had nothing to do with the most recent executions in Saudi Arabia.

According to the Bahraini authorities, two young men were executed in July 2019 after being convicted in two cases, one of which was on terrorism charges.

The video resurfaced following the Saudi authorities’ execution on March 12 of 81 people, including seven Yemenis and a Syrian citizen, whom the Saudi authorities said were convicted on terrorism-related charges.
