Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar has investigated the claim and found it to be misleading.

Did Palestinians Throw Stones at Israeli Police?

Rafael Shimunov, a Twitter user, has synced the Israeli police video with another press video of the same scene. It was clear that the alleged rioter had no stones and that his action was to place his body between the coffin and Israeli police.

Shimunov explained how Israeli police had cut another scene in order to exclude Palestinians they described as stone-throwers. He also stated that no stone should be thrown to justify attacking mourners at the funeral of a journalist assassinated by the Israeli military.

Israeli Forces Attacked Mourners

Numerous news outlets and social media users have reported on Israeli occupation forces' attacks on mourners carrying Shireen Abu Akleh’s coffin on Friday, May 13, in occupied east Jerusalem.

According to the report, Israel Police forced pallbearers to drop the coffin, confiscated Palestinian flags from mourners, and slashed the window of the hearse transporting Abu Akleh's body. Thirty-three people were injured as a result of the attacks. Meanwhile, the Jerusalem Red Crescent reported that six people were hospitalized.

International Public Opinion

According to Al Jazeera, both the UN and the U.S. have described the attack scenes as "deeply disturbing," though the U.S. has refrained from explicitly condemning Israel for the violence.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken also expressed concern about images of Israeli police intruding on her funeral procession, adding that "every family deserves to be able to lay their loved ones to rest in a dignified and unimpeded manner."

The Burial of Shireen Abu Akleh

Shireen Abu Akleh was laid to rest on Friday, May 13, following a memorial service in Ramallah on May 12. Thousands of mourners also attended the funeral of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who was killed by Israeli forces in Jenin, West Bank.
