A video purporting to show 240 boats sailing with lit lamps in Kerala, India is being circulated online. According to the claim, this was in celebration of Deepotsavam during the festival of lights.

Misbar investigated the circulating claim and found it to be misleading. The video was shot in China.

Upon conducting a reverse image search, Misbar’s team found that the video was taken in China.

The “Golden Dragon” Along the Yulong River

A thorough keyword search allowed Misbar’s team to find more information about the sailing boats in China.

According to multiple websites, “On May 19, 80 bamboo rafts with golden lights formed a 70-meter "dragon" wandering along the Yulong River in Baisha town's Yulong village in Guilin, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, presenting a powerful night vision to visitors.” This became a tradition that attracts tourist to the area.

Deepothsavam is part of Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights. The traditional festival is celebrated by married Hindu women of the Andhra region of Andhra Pradesh.
