Outdated Video of Heavy Rains Resurfaced

Using Reverse Image, Misbar’s team found that the footage is old and does not feature floods in the Yemeni city of Mukalla as some posts purported.

The clip first surfaced online in May 2018 as a hurricane hit Mukalla. Meanwhile, other sources mentioned that the video documents a tornado that struck the Sultanate of Oman in 2018, which confirms that the video is not recent.

2018 Flash Floods in Yemen

The video surfaced in May 2018 after flash floods washed away dozens of farms and several homes in the Yemeni province of central-west Marib, Anadolu Agency reported.

The floods were due to heavy rainfall when many parts of the country typically witness rainfalls at the outset of summer, especially along the country’s coast.

Yemeni People Affected by Heavy Rainfalls

News reports mentioned that more than 13,000 Yemeni people were affected by heavy seasonal rains in the central province of Marib.

People living in refugee camps were most affected, and most shelters were damaged by the heavy winds and rain, according to the Executive Unit For Internally Displaced People Camps Management.

The Yemeni local authorities said that more than 9,000 displaced families were affected by heavy rains.

Sources also warned that the continued flooding and rainfall might threaten the lives of nearly 2 million refugees living in 197 camps and gatherings in Marib.

Meanwhile, the government called on the United Nations and humanitarian organizations for help amid this natural disaster.

The Yemeni National Meteorological Center expects heavy thunderstorms in the several governorates and called on the citizens to stay away from torrents and valleys to preserve their safety.
