AI-Generated Images Used for Spreading Misinformation

A reverse image search allowed Misbar โ€˜s team to Trace the images back to the Instagram page of Infinite Odyssey, an online magazine that claims to be โ€œthe first fully A.I. created Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror Magazine.โ€

To clarify the AI-generated nature of these images, the posts sharing them carry a disclaimer that reads โ€œWRITTEN BY A.I. NOT A REAL INFORMATION.โ€

Ethics of AI-Generated Images

The misuse of AI-generated images for spreading misinformation poses a significant threat to the credibility of information online. As AI technology continues to advance, it is essential to be vigilant in detecting and countering the spread of false narratives. The responsibility lies not only with the creators of such content but also with the platforms on which they are shared.

At the Sony World Photography Award, Boris Eldagsen, a German artist, made headlines after revealing that his winning entry, titled "Pseudomnesia: The Electrician," was produced using artificial intelligence (AI). Eldagsen refused his prize, arguing that AI-generated images and photography are different entities and should not compete with each other in an award like this.

The Future of Photography with AI

The use of AI in image-making raises important questions about the future of the medium. Will AI-generated images and traditional photography coexist, or will AI eventually replace traditional photography altogether?

One possible scenario is that AI will become a new tool in photographersโ€™ arsenal, enabling them to create new and innovative images that were previously impossible to produce. For example, AI can be used to simulate complex lighting conditions or create photorealistic images of objects that do not exist in the real world.

Another scenario is that AI-generated images will become a new genre of photography, with its own set of rules and conventions. In this case, photographers will need to adapt to the changing landscape and learn to work with AI as a new medium.

For fact-checkers, AI-generated images are already posing a serious challenge.
