Israel Strikes Gaza on May 2021

According to the United Nation Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the intense fighting between Israeli forces and Palestinian armed groups in the Gaza Strip from May 10 to May 21, 2021, marked the most severe conflict since 2014.

The attack on Gaza resulted in the deaths of 261 Palestinians, including 67 children and 41 women, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) reported.

The destruction and damage caused to homes, infrastructure, and basic services were extensive.

The escalation of hostilities stemmed from mounting tensions in East Jerusalem, including access restrictions for Palestinians to holy sites during Ramadan and the threat of forced evictions of Palestinian families in Sheikh Jarrah by Israeli authorities.

Gaza Under Attack

Over the course of two days of Israeli bombardment, Israeli airstrikes on Gaza have resulted in the deaths of 20 people, including children, and at least 42 people have been injured, according to Palestinian health officials.

The PIJ has confirmed the deaths of three of its commanders, namely Jihad al-Ghannam, Khalil al-Bahtini, and Tariq Izz al-Deen, and has vowed to seek revenge for their deaths.

In response to the Israeli airstrikes, rockets have been launched from the Gaza Strip towards southern Israel.
