Nike’s Alleged Israeli Collection Sparks Boycott Calls

While Nike has not released an official statement regarding this latest issue, pro-Palestinian advocates have renewed calls to boycott Nike, among other brands that showed support for Israel during its genocidal bombardment of Gaza last October. Nike is just one of several brands facing boycotts and protests due to perceived support for Israel’s war on Gaza, as part of the larger Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign initiated in 2005.

What is BDS?

The Boycott, Divest, Sanction (BDS) movement is at the forefront of campaigns that advocate for ending all dealings with Israel. This includes boycotting both Israeli companies and global entities complicit in violating the rights of Palestinians. The campaigns also extend to boycotting Israeli sports, cultural, and academic institutions and activities. The overarching goal is to exert pressure on investors and contractors associated with Israeli and international companies involved in the crimes of the occupying state, urging them to terminate their contracts with these companies and entities.

The impact has been especially significant in the Middle East. McDonald’s CEO, Chris Kempczinski, reported in February that the war had a 'disheartening' effect on sales in Middle Eastern countries and other Muslim-majority nations, including Malaysia and Indonesia.
