Devastating Earthquakes Claimed Lives And Displace Thousands In Turkey And Syria

Two destructive earthquakes that hit southeastern Turkey and northern Syria on February 6  have resulted in the loss of numerous lives and extensive damage to residences and infrastructure in the area. Following the tragic event, where the death toll surpassed 42,000

In Turkey, United Nations development specialists reported on Tuesday that 1.5 million individuals have been rendered homeless in the southern region of the country, necessitating the construction of at least 500,000 new homes.

Children were among the most vulnerable group, as clinical psychologist Zeynep Bahadir, specializing in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), highlighted. Bahadir volunteered for six weeks with the Turkish Red Crescent as an emergency online psychologist, providing support to families with young children who were impacted by the earthquakes. U.N. Blacklists Israeli Army For Abuses Against Children In Armed

The United Nations has included the Israeli army in its list of countries accused of committing violations against children in armed conflict, commonly referred to as the "blacklist."

Chris Gunness, a former spokesperson for the U.N. agency aiding Palestinian refugees, described this list as the "ultimate list of shame," highlighting the severity of the situation. Gunness emphasized the gravity of this inclusion, noting that Israel now finds itself alongside notorious groups and regimes like Boko Haram, ISIS, al-Qaeda, Russia, and Myanmar.

The annual report on Children and Armed Conflict revealed unprecedented numbers of children being killed and injured in various regions, including Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, notably Gaza; Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, and Ukraine. This report also identified Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad for the first time for their involvement in killing, injuring, and abducting children.

Gaza is currently grappling with a sanitation crisis such as sewage problems, swarms of flies, and mosquitoes, and piles of garbage on the streets worsen with the approaching summer season.

Ismail Zayda, a resident of Gaza City, reported that water supply has been cut off for nine months, and municipal services are not functioning properly, leading to a buildup of waste. Additionally, the community is facing a new challenge of increased insects that sting residents, including children. Israel's continuous bombardment of Gaza has persisted for eight months, causing a deepening humanitarian crisis.

Human rights groups have expressed grave concerns about the dire living conditions for Palestinians, as the Israeli military campaign has destroyed neighborhoods, damaged essential infrastructure, and depleted crucial resources such as food, water, and fuel.
