Emerging story
In light of recent unrest in the U.K., social media users widely circulated a video clip purporting to show a group of Muslims blocking a road in Walthamstow with motorbikes to confront far-right protesters led by Tommy Robinson, a prominent figure in Britain's anti-Muslim riots.
The video has been used to criticize Muslims in the U.K. An X user shared the video with the caption: “Walthamstow, North London, U.K. Freeway has turned into apocalyptic scenes straight out of Mad Max. Arabs, browns, Muslims... I DON'T CARE! INVADERS HAVE TO GO! This is war!”
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the viral footage and found the claim to be misleading.
After conducting a thorough reverse image search, Misbar’s team found the video making the rounds to be older than claimed and unrelated to the recent anti-Muslim riots in the U.K.
Outdated Video Shows Bikers Blocking Road in London To Mark a Friend’s Death
Contrary to social media users’ viral claim, the video is unrelated to the recent anti-immigration protests in the U.K.
The video originates from 2023. A TikTok user posted a similar clip on August 8, 2023, with a caption explaining that the footage depicts a group of bikers gathering on a London street to mark a "fallen friend."
Misbar’s investigative team conducted a search on the similarities between the viral footage and the TikTok video showing a similar scene from a year ago. Misbar's team identified the same orange-colored building in both clips.
In addition, the same bridge was displayed in the two video clips.
Furthermore, the same highway and wall are visible in both video clips, providing additional evidence that the two videos depict the same scene: a group of bikers gathering in memory of their late friend.
According to the video's publisher, the footage was shot on the A406 in London. Misbar’s team used Google Maps to locate the same street and found striking similarities between the A406 near Woodford and the street shown in the TikTok video. This provides further evidence that the footage was indeed shot on the A406, not the alleged road in Walthamstow.
Anti-Immigration Protests Erupt in Britain
On July 29, three girls, ages six to nine, were killed in an attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance event for children in Southport, northern England. Eight other children and two adults were injured.
A 17-year-old male suspect was arrested, and false information circulated on social media claiming he was an Islamist migrant. This misinformation sparked violent anti-Muslim protests in Southport the next day, including an attempted attack on the town's mosque. The teenager has been charged with murder and attempted murder; police confirmed he was born in Britain and do not consider the attack terrorism.
Riots have since spread to more than 20 locations across Britain. These protests, involving a few hundred people each, have targeted migrants and Muslims, resulting in police vehicles being set on fire and mosques and police officers being pelted with bricks, bottles, and other objects. Shops, including those owned by Asians, have been vandalized or looted. In Rotherham, a hotel housing migrants was attacked, with windows smashed and a large garbage container set on fire outside.
Tommy Robinson: Far-Right Figurehead of Britain’s Ongoing Anti-Muslim Riots
Prime Minister Keir Starmer attributed the violence to "far-right thuggery." Prominent anti-immigration and anti-Muslim activists, including Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, known as Tommy Robinson, have promoted the protests online.
Politicians and media have accused them of spreading misinformation to incite tensions, which Robinson denies, claiming the media lies about him. Police stated that most participants in the clashes were far-right agitators from outside the local communities, but some locals with grievances and young people seeking to join the disorder also took part.
Besides, large groups of counter-protesters, anti-fascist groups, and Asian men have gathered in areas where protests have occurred or were anticipated.
