Emerging story

Recently, social media users have been circulating a video claiming to show Hashem Safi al-Din following his appointment as Hezbollah’s secretary-general after the assassination of Hassan Nasrallah.

Hezbollah's New Leader: My message to the Zionists: your celebrations won't last long.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the claim and found it to be misleading, as the footage is old and does not show Hashem Safi al-Din after the assassination of Hassan Nasrallah. Furthermore, Hezbollah has not officially announced that Safi al-Din has been named secretary-general to succeed Nasrallah.

A Military Exercise Took Place in 2023

Misbar's team found that the original footage was excerpted from a video posted by Al-Manar TV, affiliated with Hezbollah, on its website on May 30, 2023. The channel claimed the footage was from military exercises conducted by the party on May 21 to commemorate Resistance and Liberation Day.

Lebanon's Hezbollah Brigades celebrate Resistance and Liberation Day on May 25 each year, commemorating the withdrawal of the Israeli army from most of the Lebanese territories it occupied in 1978.

Who Is Hashem Safi Al-Din?

Hashem Safi al-Din is the cousin of Hassan Nasrallah. He was born in the Tyre region of southern Lebanon in 1964, completed his religious studies, and served as the head of Hezbollah's executive council. He is also a member of the Jihad Council, which oversees military operations.

In 2017, the U.S. Department of State designated him as a terrorist, and Saudi Arabia added him to its terrorism lists in the same year.

Naim Qassem, the deputy secretary-general of Hezbollah, stated that the party will select a new secretary-general as soon as possible.

Qassem added, "We are currently following the leadership and managing the confrontation according to the party's structure. Within the party structure, there are deputies for the leaders and ready substitutes in place should a leader be incapacitated in any position. We have taken the necessary steps to ensure that these substitutes can address any issues that arise. We will select a new secretary-general at the earliest opportunity, following the established selection process within the party, and we will fill the leadership roles and positions consistently. Hassan Nasrallah’s Assassination

Hezbollah mourned its secretary-general, Hassan Nasrallah, who was assassinated in Israeli airstrikes on Haret Hreik in the southern suburbs of Beirut on September 27.

Hassan Nasrallah is a Shiite cleric who joined Hezbollah in 1982 before becoming the party's secretary-general in 1992, succeeding Abbas al-Musawi, who was also assassinated by Israel.

The Israeli military stated that its aircraft targeted a meeting led by Nasrallah alongside party leaders at the central command headquarters, using approximately 85 bunker-buster bombs.
