Following the recent diplomatic crisis between Turkey and Iraq, social media users circulated several photos purporting to show Turkey's bombing of Iraqi Kurdistan. Another photo claiming to show a rocket attack on Turkey's Zelikan military base in Northern Iraq is also circulating.
Photos From Gaza Repurposed
Facebook pages recently circulated two photos claiming to have been from Turkish shelling of Erbil and Sulaymaniyah areas in Iraqi Kurdistan. Other allegations also indicated that the two images of the bombing of the Khor Mor gas fields in Chamchamal district in Sulaymaniyah province.
Misbar investigated the claim and found it to be misleading. In fact, the two images document the Israeli shelling of the Gaza Strip in 2020, not the Turkish shelling of Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, or the Khor Mor gas field in Iraqi Kurdistan. The photos have been previously shared on several occasions and at different times under the title "Israeli shelling of Gaza.''
The Photo From the Zelikan Military Base
Social media users have circulated a picture claiming to show a recent rocket attack on the Turkish army's Zelikan base in the northern Iraqi province of Nineveh.
Misbar has investigated the claim and found it to be misleading. The picture is older than claimed. The photo was published last January and shows rocket attacks on the Turkish army's Zelikan base, in Bashiqa district of Nineveh province in northern Iraq.
The Bombing of a Tourist Resort in Duhok
These images have circulated with misleading claims following the recent events in Iraqi Kurdistan, where Turkey has been accused of bombing a tourist resort in the Duhok province in the Kurdistan region of Iraq on July 20, 2022, killing 8 civilians and injuring 23 others.
In response, Turkey adamantly denied these allegations and blamed terrorists for the attack.
