AI-Generated Images Compromise Integrity During the War on Gaza
The dissemination of AI-generated content can obscure the events in Gaza (X)

Amid the ongoing Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, social media users widely shared AI-generated images on social media platforms aiming to show solidarity with the Palestinian cause. Nevertheless, the dissemination of such content could potentially obscure the actual reality unfolding in Palestine.

AI-Generated Images Circulated in Relation to the Israel-Gaza Conflict

Since October 7, a plethora of social media users and pages have been actively sharing a series of images purportedly showing scenes from the recent Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip

The first photo features the aftermath of an Israeli airstrike, showing a house exploding in front of a Palestinian infant.

Misbar’s team investigated the image using “Optic AI or Not,” which is an AI detection tool. The tool indicates that the widely shared image is AI-generated and does not feature a real incident.

The second circulating image displays Israeli tents erected on Occupied Palestinian lands to house Israelis displaced as a result of Palestinian Resistance rockets.

After a close examination of the viral image, Misbar's team concluded that the image is generated using artificial intelligence. In the picture, the depiction of the Israeli flag appears distorted. On the right side of the image, a person is depicted without distinct facial features. Moreover, despite the typically warm climate in the Occupied Palestinian territories these days, the individuals in the picture are portrayed wearing heavy clothing.

The third viral photo shows fans of the Spanish team Atletico Madrid expressing support for Palestine by raising a large Palestinian flag in the stadium during a team match.

With a closer examination of the image, it is apparent that the hands of the Atletico Madrid fans seem deformed, which is a typical problem in the Al-generated programs.

The fourth image features a tragic scene of a baby buried under the rubble of a bombed house in Gaza after being struck by an Israeli airstrike.

The image was also featured in the French newspaper, Liberation, showing an angry supporter of Palestine holding the same published image during a protest.

The image is also AI-generated. By focusing on the chin and forehead facial expressions, exaggerated features have been used in generating the picture. Moreover, the baby seen in the image has extra fingers which is a shortcoming of the AI-generated programs despite its increased development.

The final image shows several Israeli soldiers who have been eliminated by the Palestinian Resistance after invading the Gaza Strip.

After investigating the shared image, Misbar’s team found conspicuous failures that strongly suggest it was created using artificial intelligence. These aberrations contain distortions in the features of the individuals in the background of the image, abnormalities in the shape of hands and the count of legs of the standing figures, along with problems related to the image's coloration and its intense lighting.
