The British director of Jewish descent, Jonathan Glazer, won the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film for his harrowing Holocaust film "The Zone of Interest" at the 96th Academy Awards ceremony held on Sunday, March 10. The film tells the story of a Jewish girl who resisted the Auschwitz Holocaust during Nazi rule in Germany.
Upon accepting the award, Glazer addressed the ongoing Israeli occupation aggression on Gaza since October 7, 2023, stating, “Right now we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people, whether the victims of October the 7 in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza.” He further added, “All the victims of this dehumanization. How do we resist?”
Misbar's team followed Western media coverage of the speech and the ensuing controversy, noting that some media outlets refrained from directly addressing the content of the speech. Furthermore, they failed to include its main idea in the headlines of their coverage.
The Guardian’s Headline Fails To Capture Glazer’s Speech Content
The British newspaper The Guardian published a news article about Glazer's speech titled "Jonathan Glazer calls for an end to Gaza attacks at Oscars." However, this title is entirely inaccurate, as Glazer directly addressed the Israeli occupation's exploitation of the Jewish Holocaust issue, leading to the loss of innocent lives.
Reuters Excludes Glazer’s Speech From Its News Coverage
Misbar discovered that Reuters did not mention Glazer's speech in its coverage of the news. Instead, the agency focused on discussing the plot of the film, the award won by the British director, and other aspects of Jonathan Glazer's artistic career.
In contrast, Reuters addressed the content of the speech made by Ukrainian director Mstyslav Chernov, who won the Oscar for best documentary feature for his film “20 Days in Mariupol." They discussed his remarks about the Russian war on Ukraine and highlighted that the film would not have been made without Russia's war on his country.
Variety Initially Avoids Publishing the Full Speech, Then Later Reverses Its Decision
The American magazine Variety initially reported on the British director's award acceptance speech but omitted the content regarding the Israeli occupation. However, it later reconsidered its decision and published the entirety of Glazer's speech, including the portion addressing the Israeli occupation.
In contrast, Variety described the Ukrainian director's speech as powerful and expressive in a special article covering him and the award he received.
The Ongoing Israeli Aggression on Gaza
Following the failure of negotiations between Hamas and the Israeli occupation to achieve a complete ceasefire before Ramadan, the Israeli army continues its aggression on the Gaza Strip, bombing various areas, bringing the total number of Palestinian casualties since the beginning of the war on Gaza to 31,112, with 72,760 injured, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
