The Claim

A photo depicts refugees crossing the border from Turkey to Greece.

Emerging story

A picture became popular on Arabic social media pages with a claim that it shows refugees on the border between Turkey and Greece after Turkey allowed them to cross into Europe. Claims were circulating across the MENA region.


 

In February 2020, Turkey opened its borders for refugees to cross into Europe, right after 33 of its soldiers were killed in a Syrian regime airstrike in Idlib, north-west Syria.

Misbar’s Analysis

After a review of the image, Misbar's team found that it was not taken on the border between Turkey and Greece, but near the Bregana border crossing between Croatia and Slovenia.

The photo that was taken in 2015 shows a group of refugees being escorted by police as they head to a refugee camp in Slovenia, according to Getty Images.
