Misbar’s Analysis
Following the death of George Floyd, an African-American man killed in police custody, there have been widespread protests in every state of the US against police brutality. While many of these protests are peaceful, some have led to violence, often instigated by the police.
Misbar's investigation shows that during the Brooklyn protests, two lawyers were charged for participating in a Molotov cocktail attack on a police car. The car was left charred, but nobody was injured, as it was unoccupied when attacked. An image accompanying many of the social media posts about the attack does seem to depict Urooj Rahman, 31, with a rag stuffed into a Bud Light bottle, allegedly about to throw the homemade Molotov cocktail. User posts about the image range from support for Rahman to calls for her arrest and deportation. Rahman and Colinford King Mattis were identified by federal authorities as being involved in the attack. They were arrested soon after the incident and charged with causing damage to a police vehicle by fire and explosives. A criminal complaint filed by the police says that they caught the attack on video surveillance. Rahman and Mattis were followed by the police and arrested shortly after the incident. Although federal prosecutors warned that the two might “return to rioting,” federal Judge Steven Gold allowed their release on bail of $250,000 each.
Since the police reports show that Urooj Rahman was arrested for causing damage to a police vehicle with fire and explosives, she did not attack the police themselves, but rather one of their empty vehicles.
