The Claim

After Erdogan's daughter and son-in-law became targets of insults on social media, the Turkish President made changes to tighten the government’s role over social media.

Emerging story

Social media users across Turkey began hurling insults at the Turkish President’s daughter and son-in-law after they announced the birth of their 4th child. Claims were circulating across the MENA region.

Misbar’s Analysis

After announcing the birth of their fourth child, the daughter and son-n-law of President Erdogan began receiving insults over social media platforms, sparking outrage from Erdogan himself.

During a meeting of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) on Wednesday, Erdogan blamed the social media sites for allowing the posts to be posted.

“The issue we need to talk about is how these social media platforms turned into tools for such foulness. They need to be brought into order. Such platforms don’t suit this country and our people," he said.

"That’s why we want these social media platforms completely shut down or controlled after bringing the issue to our parliament."

Turkey has criticized Twitter before after they suspended over 7,000 accounts that supported the President.

In summary, after insults were thrown over social media to the daughter and son-in-law of President Erdogan over the birth of their 4th child, the President has threatened to make sweeping changes to social media laws in Turkey. However, as these claims are just threats, we label the claim that the Turkish President made changes to tighten the government’s role over social media as “misleading” because they are currently just threats.
