The Claim

The CDC sent out test kits that were tainted with COVID-19.

Emerging story

Users posted the claim in mid-July 2020. They say that COVID-19 test kits contain the virus, which means that getting tested might actually infect people.

Misbar’s Analysis

In June 2020, news sites reported that some coronavirus tests were ineffective.

These tests were contaminated in a lab, likely the CDC Respiratory Virus Diagnostic Lab. A report on the contamination said: “These tests are so sensitive that this contamination could have been caused by a single person walking through an area with positive control material and then later entering an area where test reagents were being manipulated.”

The CDC delayed the rollout of their tests due to the contamination.

This means that most of the contaminated tests were not sent out. Even if people did receive a contaminated test, it would only affect the results. The CDC did not taint the tests with the coronavirus.
