The Claim

In a tweet, U.S. President Trump said that the confederate flag is a “symbol of love.”

Emerging story

In mid-July 2020, users on social media reposted a tweet allegedly written by U.S. President Trump. The tweet, written in Trump’s style, calls the confederate flag a “symbol of LOVE!!”

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation shows that the tweet was fabricated. It is not on his Twitter timeline or archived elsewhere online.

The fabricated tweet was likely written to deride the President, whose supporters sometimes fly the Confederate flag at rallies. He has said that some people “love” the Confederate flag, meaning that it should not be banned.

He also called Black Lives Matter a “symbol of hate” and told U.S. embassies that they cannot fly the Pride flag on flagpoles.

However, he did not write the viral tweet calling the Confederate flag a symbol of love.
