The Claim

Dr. Fauci compared research about COVID to what we know about chicken pox

Emerging story

In late July 2020, users on social media began posting a quote that they attributed to Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The quote compares COVID-19 to chickenpox.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation into this claim reveals it to be false. Dr. Fauci did not make the viral statement, but rather Facebook user Amy Wright of Asheville, North Carolina did on June 14th.

As you can see from the screenshot, Wright is not a medical professional and seems to have been only stating her opinion, not trying to spread misinformation or false facts. It is unclear who first picked up her post and attributed it to Dr. Fauci, but it was only after this point that it went viral. Dr. Fauci himself has said that the COVID crisis is severe, and that the US has a "serious problem."
