The Claim

The FBI said that “teachers are the number one occupation of Antifa."

Emerging story

In late July 2020, users on social media, specifically Twitter, began posting that the most prevalent occupation in Antifa is "teacher."

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation into this claim reveals it to be false. Antifa, which stands for ant-fascist, is a loosely affiliated coalition, not an organization. While Fox reported on the link between college campuses and possible Antifa links, there is no evidence showing that most Antifa affiliates are teachers.

According to Reuters, the FBI has reported that “Our focus is not on membership in particular groups but on individuals who commit violence and criminal activity that constitutes a federal crime or poses a threat to national security. The FBI has not made any such statements about the occupations of people who are attracted to particular ideologies.” As such it would appear that the FBI has made no such designation about the group.
