The Claim

People with O blood type are less likely to be hospitalized and tested positive for COVID-19 than people with A, B, or AB blood types.

Emerging story

A research paper published in March raised a debate on social media claiming that there is a link between the blood type and COVID-19. Some users claimed that patients with blood types B and AB who received a test were more likely to test positive and blood type O was less likely to test positive. Rh+ patients were more likely to test positive.

Others claimed that the risk for COVID-19 was 45% higher for people with type ِA blood than those with other blood types. It appeared to be 35% lower for people with type O.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar didn’t find any clear evidence to show a relationship between blood type and severity of the illness. The COVID-19 pandemic has given a rise to a lot of potentially dangerous misinformation. Adding that the World Health Organization didn’t mention anything related to the previous circulating claims and studies. All the studies show that there might be a connection between COVID-19 and the blood type. More research is needed to prove if there is any link between COVID-19 and the blood type.
