The Claim

As a result of posting a video containing misinformation about the COVID-19 virus, Donald Trump Jr. (son of U.S. President Donald Trump) was banned from Twitter.

Emerging story

In late July 2020, Twitter users circulated a claim that Donald Trump Jr. was “banned out of his Twitter account for spreading disinformation.”

Misbar’s Analysis

In the midst of a resurgence of COVID-19 cases in the U.S., which at the time of writing has over four million confirmed cases and more than 150,000 deaths, Donald Trump Jr. posted a video featuring controversial claims on the virus. Twitter labeled the video for spreading misinformation.

The video in question features Dr. Stella Immanuel, a member of the self-titled group “America’s Frontline Doctors,” with several other people dressed in white doctors coats.

Immanuel is also a minister and has made several other bold claims in the past, such as stating that “tormenting spirits” are the cause of miscarriages, marital distress, and impotence (amongst other hardships).

During the video (which has since been taken down), Immanuel states that wearing masks is unnecessary, and that COVID-19 can be cured through hydroxychloroquine, zinc, and zithromax. President Trump has personally advocated for the use of hydroxychloroquine as a treatment, but the FDA revoked any use of the drug after a brief trial period months ago. Trump and some of his associates continue to champion the potentially dangerous drug.

Twitter cited their “policy on spreading misleading and potentially harmful information related to COVID-19” to take down Immanuel’s video on Donald Trump Jr.’s account, as well as elsewhere on the platform.

Although Trump Jr. was chastised for his spreading of misinformation, upon further research Misbar discovered that he was not actually banned as many are claiming. Twitter essentially put Trump Jr. on probation for a period of twelve hours.
