Emerging story
In late July 2020, users across social media platforms began circulating the claim that Ian Huntley was found dead in his cell from an apparent overdose.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation found that Huntley – who was convicted of murdering two 10-year-old girls in Soham, Cambridgeshire, England in 2002 and sentenced to two terms of life imprisonment – is still alive.
He is serving his sentences at HMP Frankland in County Durham. Misbar got in touch with a spokesperson from the prison, who told us that Huntley has not died.
Huntley did attempt suicide via overdose in 2006, but did not die. In 2010 he was attacked by fellow inmate Damien Fowkes. Fowkes slashed his throat, but Huntley survived the assault. He has been the subject of many rumors following his incarceration, including that he has coronavirus.
Despite the rumors, a previous suicide attempt, and a near-fatal attack, Huntley is not dead.
