The Claim

The video below shows winds from Hurricane Hanna toppling the Texas border wall between the U.S. and Mexico.

Emerging story

In late July 2020, following Hurricane Hanna’s landfall in Texas, users on social media began posting a video that they claim depicts the hurricane knocking down the border wall.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation found that the video is actually from June 2020. US Customs and Border Protection released a statement saying that they are “not aware of any border wall panels falling over due to Hurricane Hanna.” Further, “the video circulating on social media appears to be from June 2020 when high winds caused several border wall panels that were pending additional anchoring to fall over at a construction site near Deming, New Mexico.”

While Hurricane Hanna did cause stormy weather in Texas, it crossed the state hundreds of miles away from the footage of the border zone in Deming, New Mexico.
