The Claim

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is providing $4,800 in hazard pay to those who have been working during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Emerging story

In July 2020, a message began circulating on social media, specifically Twitter, that claimed the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was providing $4,800 hazard pay for all essential workers who have been working during COVID.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation into this claim reveals it to be false. The link on the social media post actually takes you to an image of a gorilla giving the middle finger, similarly to what we reported here. Nevertheless, many have commented on the message and it has begun a discussion of whether essential workers do indeed deserve to receive their own bailout. FEMA themselves have added a “rumor control” page to their website to dispel this rumor.
