Emerging story
In late July 2020, an image circulated on social media that users claim depicts a BLM protestor attacking a priest with brass knuckles.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar's investigation found that the caption is incorrect. Clarence Page, the man in the photo wearing a blue bandana, did attack a man who identified himself as Paul EM, shown wearing a green “All Lives Matters” shirt. However, Page wore no BLM insignia and the event that he participated in was not arranged by the BLM group. Further, Paul EM is not a priest nor was he with the contingent of Christians who had gathered to pray at the foot of the Saint Louis statue.
The counter protest in which Page participated was organized by Umar Lee, a local activist, and Moji Sidiqi of the The 'Regenional' Muslim Action Network.
We found that Page was not armed with brass knuckles. Soon after the image of Page punching Paul EM went viral, Page reported to a local news source that he was unarmed but had intended to attack a man who he thought was a white nationalist and a racist. As a result of statements made by first hand witnesses and Page's own admissions of guilt, Page was charged under Missouri state law with 4 counts of fourth-degree assault. Fourth-degree assaults are not the type of charges issued for any assault with a weapon such as brass knuckles.
Paul EM said he is glad Page attacked him if Page really thought he was a racist. He also claims that the organizer of the rally, Omar Lee, had intentionally misinformed BLM activists that violent white supremacists would be on scene.
