In July 2020, a video supposedly showing an octopus moving quickly across a sandy beach was posted by ghost3dee and went viral on Twitter and Instagram.

Misbar’s investigation into this claim reveals it to be false. The video in question is actually a CGI digital art project created by Instagram user ghost3dee, a Qatari visual effects artist. While there are some octopi, like one species found off the northern coast of Australia, which can travel small distances across land, octopi don’t travel as quickly and are generally not as large as in the video.
