The Claim

The photo below shows the exhumation of the body of Hujr ibn Adi.

Emerging story

In summer 2020, users on social media began recirculating a claim that an image shows the body of a “healthy” exhumed Hujr Ibn Adi.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation found that the photo does not depict Hujr ibn Adi. Hujr, a companion to Islamic prophet Muhammad, was sentenced to death by the Umayyad Caliph Muawiyah I in 660 CE. 

On May 2, 2013, Jabhat al-Nusra attacked the mausoleum in Adra, Syria, where Hujr was buried. They desecrated his shrine and are said to have exhumed his remains. Syrian shrines and mausoleums have been the target of several subsequent attacks.  

However, the corpse shown in the image is not Hujr. The Shafaqna News Agency announced that the picture actually depicts Mahrous al-Sharbaji
