The Claim

President Trump sent former President Obama a bill for vacations he took with taxpayer money.

Emerging story

The website America’s Last Line of Defense published an article reporting that President Donald Trump had ended “Obama’s Vacation Scam,” a situation in which former President Obama had, while in office, used taxpayer dollars to fund his family’s vacations (and those of two dozen staff members) through the year 2036. Once the scam had been uncovered, the article claimed that Trump had sent Obama a bill for the difference. This claim has since been widely circulated on social media, specifically Twitter.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation into this claim reveals it to be false. There is no truth to these claims whatsoever. Misbar has published many instances of Fake News from America’s Last Line of Defense. The publication claims to be a “satire” resource but nevertheless publishes articles claiming to be real news. Inevitably, many people accept the information thereof and circulate it further via social media.

On another note, there are frequent, heated, and bipartisan debates on social media and mainstream media about the number of days that Obama vs. Trump have spent playing golf while in office, presuming that the more days spent, the more days not in the office, and the less the president gets done overall. This is an entirely separate topic but seems, at least on the surface, to be another nonimportant issue and source of distraction for an already distracted electorate. Perhaps rather than speculate about how hard a representative is working, we should simply evaluate the end product: what that representative is actually accomplishing in office, and whether it makes our state or country a better place for us and our families to live, or not.
