The claim likely started recirculating due to recent protests against racial injustice (Getty).

The Claim

19-year old Sean Jackson asked to be tried “as a white man” in court.

Emerging story

On March 8, 2020, Global NEA published an article called: “Courtroom shocked after black teen requested to be tried as a white man.” In August 2020, social media users began recirculating the claim.

Misbar’s Analysis

However, Misbar’s investigation found that the claim is false. We conducted a reverse image search on the picture in the news article and found that it actually depicts Reginald Blanton, who was arrested in New Orleans in 2019.

We also found that there is no record of anybody named Sean Jackson arrested in Tampa in 2020.

Global NEA does not claim to be satire, but many of its articles (“Man misses his own wedding watching Rick and Morty,” “Holding farts in for too long can cause brain damage and mental illness”) do not appear to be steeped in fact.
