Users on social media shared a picture thousands of times claiming a man and woman pictured with Kamala Harris are her father and mother. Some accused Kamala Harris of pretending to be a black American.
“BUT WHY DO I PRETEND TO BE BLACK AMERICAN????” says a Facebook post on August 11, 2020.
The photo was circulating on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter after Joe Biden announced that Harris would be his running mate to challenge President Donald Trump in November's election.

Misbar’s investigation found that the two people who appear in the photo with the Democratic vice presidential candidate are not her parents.
Harris’s father is a Professor of Economics at Stanford University.
Harris posted a picture of her mother and sister on her Instagram in July 2019.
Neither of them appear in the photo of Harris that is circulating on social media.
