The Claim

Former President Bracka Obama cited COVID-19 as a reason that rooms full of people are dangerous and that the public must mail-in vote at Rep. John Lewis's funeral

Emerging story

Facebook users are claiming that during Rep. John Lewis’s funeral, former President Barack Obama told those in attendance that rooms full of people are dangerous and that the public must mail in vote in the 2020 election

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation shows that the claim is fake. Former President Obama delivered his eulogy and only mentioned mail-in voting once, stating, “We may no longer have to guess the number of jelly beans in a jar in order to cast a ballot, but even as we sit here, there are those in power who are doing their darnedest to discourage people from voting by closing polling locations and targeting minorities and students with restrictive ID laws and attacking our voting rights with surgical precision, even undermining the Postal Service in the run-up to an election that’s gonna be dependent on mail-in ballots so people don’t get sick." This statement was in fact the only statement that the former President made in regards to mail-in voting. The entirety of Obama’s eulogy can be read here.
