The Claim

US Senator Kamala Harris said while running for President that if elected she would sign an executive order to confiscate Americans’ guns.

Emerging story

Since Joe Biden chose Kamala Harris for his Vice Presidential candidate, social media posts have been circulating, pointing out many accusations regarding the candidates individually and their relationship. One of these has involved reposting quotes from during the Democratic Convention Debates, during which Kamala Harris said she will sign an executive order to force Americans to hand over all firearms to authorities.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation into this claim reveals it to be false. During a CNN town hall event, Harris is quoted as saying “Upon being elected, I will give the US Congress 100 days to… pass reasonable gun safety laws. And if they fail to do it, I will take executive action.” Furthermore, in September 2019, also while running for President, Harris was quoted on NBC’s The Tonight Show that she supports a “mandatory buyback” of semi-automatic firearms. However, regardless of any implication that these statements may have, or speculations that politicians may only state a fraction of what they aim to do in order to appear more centrist and thereby garner a larger electorate, Harris has not explicitly said that she will confiscate or buy back all guns.
