In August 2020, following Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s choice of Harris as a running mate, users on social media began circulating the claim that Harris wants to end beef production.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation found that Harris has never said she wants to end the beef industry. She did cosponsor legislation introduced by Cory Booker, which would protect workers at meatpacking factories through the pandemic. She also said: "As a nation, we actually have to have a real priority at the highest level of government around what we eat and in terms of healthy eating.”
Mike Pence responded to this by saying: “Well I've got some red meat for you: We're not going to let Joe Biden & Kamala Harris cut America's meat!" This likely sparked the rumor that Harris wants to destroy the beef industry.
However, advocating for meatpacking workers’ health and the public’s healthy eating does not mean that Harris wants to eliminate beef. In fact, she even said that she loves “cheeseburgers from time to time.”
